Canopy

Canopy are a Ford backed start-up working in the vehicle security space. The company began as an internal project within Ford, but got split out in to a separate company. I was the lead product designer on the project, working with stakeholders, department leads, research, engineering, and product owners, to take an idea, expand upon it, design, prototype, test and validate those designs and ideas, and then deliver engineer ready designs accompanied by a new design system built from the ground up.
This was a 0-1 stage start-up, successfully releasing the product to market.

The Problem
In the United States, nearly half of the population either own or drive a truck. Trucks have open truck beds, and an increasing number of people are losing valuable items to theft. Despite the many alarm systems and dashcams in the market, truck owners often aren’t aware of a theft until it’s too late. Canopy saw this problem as an opportunity to redefine vehicle security, and create a smarter solution for truck owners.

My role
My role was to understand the problem and business opportunity, and then get to grips with the concept and hardware offering, then think through everything the software needed to do, and design multiple different user journeys and screens that could be prototyped, tested, validated, built, and shipped.
This was a systems thinking project, not only focussing on the now, but also future scalability.
Our process
Creating a hardware first product meant that our hardware designers and industry experts needed to be confident with their proposition, as it is very difficult to test hardware without building it properly first.
The software however was a lot easier, as once we knew what the hardware could do, we could design the best user experiences, and then prototype, test and validate them, before moving them to engineering.

Hardware
My role was to understand the problem and business opportunity, and then get to grips with the concept and hardware offering, then think through everything the software needed to do, and design multiple different user journeys and screens that could be prototyped, tested, validated, built, and shipped.
This was a systems thinking project, not only focussing on the now, but also future scalability.
Software
The software comes in the form of a mobile App. The App can notify a user when a threat is detected in or around their truck bed. Clicking on a notification opens the App on the LIVE stream tab, where a user can view live footage and hear live activity from their truck bed. All footage that is collected is then automatically uploaded in to the cloud and stored securely. This footage can be viewed at a later time, and be shared with law enforcement and insurance providers.
The software also allows for account creation, the ability to add, edit or delete people, locations, and vehicles, as well as old notifications and vehicle or driver statistics. The App also has a map that shows the user where their vehicle is, with the ability to locate more than one vehicle or person, and get directions to them.

the Hardware

Camera unit
Canopy’s camera unit provides HD live streaming and AI-powered intrusion monitoring of a vehicles truck bed, with an ultra-wide 180° field of view and night vision.

Sensors
Sensors are used to detect motion in and around the truck bed. Through the use of AI and machine learning, the hardware can identify threats and trigger video recording, streaming and notifications.

Lights
Lights are used to notify a potential thief that they are being monitored. They are used as both a deterrent, and to light up the truck bed at night time to illuminate any illegal activity.

Battery unit
Canopy uses a rechargeable battery that is designed to power the camera unit when the vehicle is off. The battery automatically charges up whenever the vehicle is driven, by the vehicle’s on-board diagnostics port.
Cellular 4G LTE
Right out of the box, Canopy comes with an unlimited data plan that powers live streaming, intrusion notifications, and saving valuable video evidence to the cloud.

Processing
To provide smarter, timely notifications about potential intrusions to the truck bed, Canopy pairs its advanced AI model with powerful on-device processing.

The Software

HD LIVE Streaming
The primary feature of the Canopy App, is the ability to view live HD footage of your vehicles truck bed from your mobile phone, wherever you are in the world.

AI Notifications
Through the use of AI and machine learning, Canopy can tell the difference between a threat and a non-threat. When a threat is detected, the vehicle owner will be notified immediately.

Cloud Event History
As well as notifying the truck owner when a threat is detected, and activating live streaming, Canopy also records all of the video and audio footage, and securely uploads it to the cloud using its always on 4G LTE connectivity.

User & Vehicle Statistics
Additionally, as well as the core features of Canopy, the vehicle owner can also view driver and vehicle statistics. This feature becomes more interesting when scaling up to a fleet of vehicles that are driven by multiple drivers.
The Experience
. The best part is that it automatically saves video and stores it in the cloud, which is life changing when filing police reports and insurance claims .

Reports
As well as capturing all event activity and uploading the video and audio footage to the cloud, every potential threat also has its own report screen, where the vehicle owner can see exactly what happened and where, and what the final outcome was.
From here they can download, print, or share that report.
The Deliverables
The key deliverables were broken down in to sixteen different sections; Sign up, Compatibility, Shop, Log in, Forgot password, Order status, Onboarding, Main screens, Event report, Notifications, Account, Vehicle, Device, Service, Support, and Website.
Along side these key deliverables, a design system was also built from the ground up.
